WCHG commissioned us to create a 2D animated explainer video to help colleagues understand how their tone of voice and the way they communicate can directly affect their tenants.

The animation was designed to bring the subject to life in a simple and relatable way, using engaging visual storytelling to demonstrate how different approaches to communication can influence a tenant’s experience. By presenting everyday situations through animation, we were able to turn an important internal message into something clear, memorable and easy for colleagues across the organisation to understand.

Challenge

Wythenshawe Community Housing Group (WCHG) wanted to help colleagues better understand how the way they communicate can directly influence a tenant’s experience.

Tone of voice can have a significant impact on how a message is received, particularly when dealing with sensitive situations or difficult conversations. The challenge was to take this relatively abstract subject and turn it into something clear, relatable and memorable for colleagues across the organisation.

The animation needed to demonstrate how small changes in language, tone and approach could completely change the way an interaction feels from a tenant’s perspective.

Solution

We created a bespoke 2D animated explainer video that used simple visual storytelling and relatable scenarios to demonstrate the importance of tone of voice.

Rather than presenting the subject as traditional training material, animation allowed us to create recognisable situations and show how different approaches to communication could affect the people involved.

The friendly illustrated style helped make the subject approachable while ensuring the underlying message remained clear – encouraging colleagues to think about not only what they communicate, but how they communicate it.

Process

Creative Development

We began by understanding the key messages WCHG wanted colleagues to take away from the animation and identifying how these could be communicated through simple, recognisable situations.

Storyboarding

A storyboard was developed to establish the structure of the animation and map out how each scenario would unfold. This allowed us to carefully plan the visual storytelling and ensure the message remained clear throughout.

Illustration & Visual Development

A bespoke illustrated style was created for the project, developing characters and environments that felt friendly, accessible and appropriate for WCHG’s internal audience.

The simplified visual approach allowed the viewer to concentrate on the interactions between the characters and the effect different styles of communication could have.

2D Animation

The illustrations were brought to life through 2D animation, using character movement, expressions and carefully timed interactions to help communicate the different situations and reinforce the key messages.

Post-Production & Delivery

The individual scenes were edited together and refined to create a cohesive animated explainer video that WCHG could use as part of its internal communications and colleague engagement.

Results

  • Created an engaging 2D animated explainer video for WCHG.
  • Turned an abstract subject such as tone of voice into a clear and relatable visual story.
  • Helped demonstrate how communication can directly influence a tenant’s experience.
  • Used relatable scenarios to encourage colleagues to consider how their communication may be perceived by others.
  • Created a friendly and accessible alternative to traditional internal training material.
  • Provided WCHG with a reusable animation for internal communications and colleague engagement.
  • Demonstrated how 2D animation can make important workplace messages easier to understand and remember.
